Early Methodism emerged in England from its capacity to coalesce believers around a shared communal vision for passionate worship, innovative ministry, and authentic Christian discipleship formation. While this basic posture and instinct would grow into a denomination--first in the United States, then in Great Britain, and, ultimately, around the world--this missionally-focused “connexional” feature of Methodism is programmed into our theological and cultural DNA and may serve as the catalyst for our effective missional engagement today and into the future. We will explore how this vital connectional past may serve as prologue to an innovative present approach to coalitional ministry strategies to advance the mission and work of the local small membership United Methodist Church. Cornerstone Ministries, The United Methodist Church in northcentral West Virginia (WV Annual Conference) will serve as a case study for this exploration and conversation.

As members of local faith communities, we are called connect with, reach, serve, and advocate for the people and organizations around us. God has planted us where we are, “for such a time as this.” We will explore ways each of us, pastors and laity, can learn to discern the prevailing needs around us and then become people of action to work for changes.

Our communities are becoming increasingly diverse. More and more of our neighbors are from a variety of cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds. But most churches are still culturally homogenous and are not reflective of every tribe and tongue. As agents of God’s reconciliation and hope, how can we minister more effectively to our multicultural society that includes various racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds? In this lunch and learn session, we’ll think together about what it takes to create and sustain a church culture that welcomes, accepts, respects and values people from various colors, classes, cultures.

Since July 2023, The Reverend Leah Burns has served as the associate director of Multicultural Ministries in the Holston Conference. She seeks to lead and guide the church and community as they too face “the challenges of a new age.” In the pursuit of building diverse and inclusive faith communities reflective of the richness of our broader society, she emphasizes honoring the cultural heritage and traditions that each group brings. Multicultural Ministries was specifically established to assist the Annual Conference and its congregations in achieving full, equal participation of racial and ethnic minority constituencies in the Church’s mission and life.
Rev. Burns actively cultivates racial literacy in churches and communities by bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to build new relationships. She achieves this through leading workshops, seminars, book studies, discussions, and Bible studies across the Holston Annual Conference, which encompasses East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. A licensed and certified local pastor for 20 years, she has served pastoral appointments at Lennon-Seney, Second, Church Street, and Haven Chapel United Methodist Churches.

Small churches hold a rare ministry characteristic: They are both nimble responders and trusted community partners. Rev. Bradley Moore will share inspiring, instructive stories of partnering with his community for his community. Missions of care do not require endless resources by one group. Instead they can thrive with creative collaboration among groups and neighbors. It turns out small churches are exactly what is needed to unleash whole-community caring projects that can build the kingdom of God.
